Lecture Description

Both Hair Pulling Disorder (also called Trichotillomania) and Skin Picking Disorder (also called Excoriation Disorder) are clinical disorders that are neither rare nor benign. The Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) Treatment model provides a guiding, comprehensive, conceptual framework that encompasses and integrates sensory, cognitive, affective, motor and environmental variables into an individualized treatment package geared to the unique clinical phenomenology of each patient. This training will provide an overview of the current state of knowledge regarding BFRBs and will provide extensive information on treating BFRBs utilizing the Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) treatment model.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, the learner will be able to:

1) Describe the varieties and defining characteristics of BFRBs as currently understood by expert clinicians and researchers.

2) Describe the importance of the clinical phenomenology of BFRBs as reflected in Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) treatment.

3) Describe how the ComB model guides assessment, patient education and clinical decision-making throughout the treatment process.
